Exodus 21:22–23

"If men fight and hurt a pregnant woman so that she miscarriages, but no other harm follows, the perpetrator shall be fined... But if harm follows, then you shall give life for life."

Structural Context

Classical Rabbinic law treats human life as possessing inherent, sacred value. The text establishes a clear distinction between potential life and existing full personhood (nefesh), placing the highest priority on protecting existing human health and life from physical harm.
